Dr. Siri Smith is one of our talented chiropractors at Midtown Integrative Health & Wellness. She joined our practice in 2013, after returning from California, and has cultivated a loyal patient base through her proven healing touch.
Once you meet Dr. Smith, you’ll immediately feel her passion for life. She loves live music and makes it a priority to see her favorite acts whenever they are in town. The day we caught up with her for this interview she was headed to City Winery to see Marc Cohn and Jackson Browne.
Q: What led you to become a chiropractor?
A: Well, my entire family is in medicine. My parents were pharmacists. Two of my brothers are doctors. So I knew I wanted to do something related to health care. But I discovered I wanted to be a chiropractor after I was treated by one. Chiropractic was able to help me heal from the damage that years of antibiotics had done to my body. That experience showed me how chiropractic adjustments can strengthen the immune system and heal your body. Your body wants to heal itself, and it is designed with that innate ability. A good chiropractor can help promote the natural healing process. I’ve been practicing now for 35 years and I see that it works.
Q: Is there any specialty that you are known for?
A: I am certified in Sacro Occipital Technique, which includes a way to identify signs in the body to guide what adjustments and correctionsare to be made. I also am trained in Pettibon Bio-Mechanics, a specialized and specific instrument adjusting technique, Applied Kinesiology, among others.
Q: How do you work with the other specialists at Midtown Integrative?
A: I love that we have a team here that can help my patients in areas that I don’t specialize in. I work a lot with our physical therapy group. Martin Ridley is one of the physical therapists with Midtown Integrative Physical Therapy. He is always there to help me with patients I may need another opinion about. Especially shoulders, which are a trouble spot for many people. I also refer to Willow Jarosh, our nutritionist and registered dietitian, to help patients with their diets. It’s really great to have the expertise of other professionals in the same office.
Q: Who should see a chiropractor on a regular basis?
A: Everyone should. I strongly believe that good posture and spinal alignment holds the key to our bodies’ ability to heal. Regular adjustments make all the difference in keeping people healthy. I also discuss the importance of lifestyle- diet, exercise, sleep, stress management and more. It should be seen as preventive care and not just for when something goes wrong.
Q: What is something you are particularly proud of in your career?
A: I especially love treating women while they are pregnant and after they have given birth. As you can imagine, carrying that extra weight for such a long period of time can cause all sorts of alignment issues and pain. I help women during their pregnancies and then afterwards as well. Being a new parent isn’t easy on the body either. I, of course, love when they ask me check their children’s spines too!
