Featured Stretch: Reclining Twist

July 27, 2017

In Dr. Todd Sinett’s book “3 Weeks to a Better Back” he features a variety of stretches that help you achieve a healthy, pain-free back. One of our favorites is the reclining twist because you can really feel palpable tension relief.

While lying on your back, keep your shoulders flat on the ground, bend your right leg and slowly bring your right knee to the left side of your body until in touches the floor. Hold the position for 10 breaths and repeat on the other side.

Not only does the reclining twist stretch the back muscles and spine, it also stimulates the kidneys, stomach, bladder and intestines. Stress relief is another bonus benefit!

“Over time this stretch will increase your spinal mobility, release compression on your lower back, and ultimately relax your entire body while it calms your mind,” says Dr. Sinett. “It works extremely well as a standalone exercise. I like to do it before going to sleep to release tension and encourage my body, and mind, to unwind from the day.”
